Pipe Weight Calculator

Pipe Weight Calculator (Welded & Seamless)

Calculate theoretical weight per piece, line weight, and pieces per metric ton from OD, wall thickness, length, and density.

OD/WT: mm/in · Length: m/mm/ft · Output: kg/lb · kg/m & lb/ft

Inputs

Note: This calculator returns theoretical weight. Actual weight may vary due to ovality, tolerances, surface condition, and weld bead. For final billing/customs, follow mill packing list and MTC.

Results

Single piece weight
Theoretical line weight
Pieces per metric ton
pcs per 1000 kg
Total weight (pieces)

Formula & Notes

ID = OD − 2 × WT
A = (π / 4) × (OD² − ID²)
Weight per metre = ρ × A
Single piece = (weight per metre) × length

Why Pipe Weight Matters in Procurement and Logistics

Pipe is typically bought and sold by weight. If the weight estimate is off, your quotation, freight budget, and packing plan can shift quickly. A reliable theoretical weight helps you compare offers, plan container loading, and prepare consistent documents for customers and forwarders.

What This Pipe Weight Calculator Covers

  • Weight per piece from OD, wall thickness, length, and density
  • Theoretical kg/m and lb/ft line weight for fast engineering checks
  • Estimated pieces per metric ton (pcs / 1000 kg) to support purchasing and shipment planning

Item What to Enter Units Supported Why It Matters
Outer Diameter (OD) Measured OD from spec or drawing mm / inch Defines the outside size of the pipe
Wall Thickness (WT) Nominal or actual wall thickness mm / inch Small changes have a large impact on weight
Length per piece Cut length per pipe m / mm / ft Used to convert kg/m into piece weight
Density (ρ) Material density for the alloy kg/m³ Different alloys vary—set the correct density for accurate estimates
Outputs Piece weight, line weight, pieces per ton kg / lb · kg/m / lb/ft Supports quotations, logistics planning, and packing lists

Practical Examples

Example 1: 304 Stainless Steel Pipe

  • OD = 114.3 mm, WT = 6.0 mm, Length = 6.0 m, Density ≈ 7930 kg/m³
  • Line weight ≈ 16.19 kg/m; single piece ≈ 97.13 kg

Example 2: Duplex 2205 Pipe

  • OD = 60.3 mm, WT = 3.9 mm, Length = 6.0 m, Density ≈ 7800 kg/m³
  • Line weight ≈ 5.39 kg/m; single piece ≈ 32.34 kg

FAQ

Can I use this for welded and seamless pipe?

Yes. The calculation is based on OD and wall thickness. The weld bead can slightly affect real weight, but the formula is suitable for quotes and planning.

What if I only know NPS and schedule?

Look up the actual OD and wall thickness from a schedule table, then enter OD and WT. This calculator uses real dimensions rather than schedule labels.

Are the results exact?

No—results are theoretical. For contracts, customs clearance, and final billing, use the mill packing list and material test certificate (MTC).

My alloy is not listed—what should I do?

Select “Custom density” and enter your material’s density value (kg/m³). For critical work, confirm density from your specification or supplier data.
