STEEL QUALITY CONTROL

Steel Quality Inspection & Pre-Shipment Verification

LYH Steel inspects steel products against the agreed purchase requirements before shipment, helping buyers reduce the risk of material, dimension, quantity, packing, and traceability discrepancies.

Inspection can cover MTC verification, PMI, dimensions, surface condition, quantity, weight, export packing, container condition, loading and seal records according to the order and inspection scope.

INSPECTION BASIS

Inspection starts with the purchase specification

A measurement only becomes meaningful when it is compared with an agreed acceptance requirement. LYH Steel checks the inspection scope against the purchase order, product standard, drawings, dimensions, tolerances, surface requirements, packing requirements and buyer-defined checkpoints.

Ordered Material

Grade, product form, standard, delivery condition, surface finish and processing requirements.

Dimensions & Tolerances

Thickness, width, length, OD, wall thickness, diameter, flatness and other agreed limits.

Shipment Requirements

Quantity, labels, marks, protective film, export packing, loading and required inspection evidence.

If your project requires tighter tolerances, a special drawing, third-party inspection or additional acceptance criteria, include them in the RFQ before production.
PRE-SHIPMENT

Pre-Shipment Inspection

Pre-shipment inspection is performed after production and before cargo release. Depending on the agreed scope, inspection can be conducted by sampling or by checking all specified items.

Typical checkpoints

  • Product type and ordered grade
  • Quantity and shipment weight
  • Dimensions and tolerance
  • Visible surface condition and finish
  • Marking and heat-number traceability
  • Packing, labels and protection
  • Required inspection photos and records
Critical projects may require a broader inspection scope than routine commercial shipments.

CHECKLIST

Steel Inspection Checklist

Inspection Area What We Verify Typical Evidence / Tools Buyer Purpose
Material identity Grade, heat number, markings, MTC, batch traceability MTC, heat number, product marking, PMI where required Reduce material-mix and traceability risk
Quantity Pieces, bundles, coils, tubes, bars or packages Physical count and packing list Confirm ordered quantity before shipment
Weight Actual shipment or package weight Weighing equipment / shipment record Verify shipping quantity and documents
Dimensions Thickness, width, length, OD, wall thickness, diameter Micrometer, caliper, ultrasonic thickness gauge Confirm ordered size and tolerance
Surface Scratches, dents, pits, stains, finish consistency Visual inspection and photos Identify visible defects before dispatch
Packing & labels Shipping marks, labels, wrapping, package condition Visual check, photos, packing list Support traceability and transit protection
Container loading Container condition, placement, lashing, seal Loading photos, container number, seal number Reduce loading and transport discrepancies
DIMENSIONS

Dimension & Tolerance Inspection

Plate, Sheet & Coil

Thickness, width and other agreed dimensions are checked with suitable measuring tools.

Bar

Diameter, width, thickness or profile dimensions are checked according to the ordered bar type.

Pipe & Tube

Outside diameter and wall thickness can be checked using calipers, micrometers or ultrasonic thickness equipment where appropriate.

Steel thickness inspection using a precision measuring instrument

Dimension verification should be compared with the ordered standard and tolerance.

TRACEABILITY

MTC & Traceability Verification

The Mill Test Certificate is cross-checked with the supplied material to support grade and batch traceability.

  • Material grade / designation
  • Heat or batch number
  • Chemical composition listed on the certificate
  • Mechanical properties listed on the certificate
  • Applicable product standard and delivery condition, where stated
  • Consistency between certificate, product marking and shipment identification
MTC verification supports traceability between the supplied steel, product markings and shipment documents.
MATERIAL ID

PMI Material Verification

Positive Material Identification (PMI) can be used as a rapid, non-destructive verification step for alloy identification and to help detect material mix-ups.

PMI is a verification tool and does not replace the full MTC or any laboratory testing required by the governing specification.

PMI can be added to the inspection scope when material identity requires additional verification before shipment.

Handheld PMI verification can help confirm alloy identity and reduce material-mix risk.

SURFACE

Visual Inspection & Surface Condition

  • Scratches, dents, pits, stains and visible damage
  • Finish consistency where a finish is specified
  • Protective film condition where applicable
  • Edge condition and visible processing quality
  • Marking and identification consistency
PACKING

Packing & Label Verification

  • Package quantity and bundle identification
  • Shipping marks and labels
  • Waterproof or protective wrapping where required
  • Edge and corner protection where required
  • Package stability for handling and container loading
Packing requirements should be agreed before production because protection needs vary by product form, finish, destination and handling method.
LOADING

Container Loading Supervision

LYH Steel supervises container loading to verify shipment identity, container condition, packing, cargo placement and sealing before departure.

1
Quantity & Weight

Re-check shipment quantity and weight against shipping documents.

2
Packing & Labels

Verify package condition, marks, labels and identification before loading.

3
Container Condition

Check cleanliness, dryness and visible structural condition.

4
Loading & Securing

Monitor cargo placement, dunnage and lashing to reduce movement.

5
Seal & Record

Record the container and seal number after loading is completed.

EXPORT HANDLING

BUYER RECORDS

What the Buyer Can Receive After Inspection

Inspection Evidence

Photos of measured items, markings, packing and loading checkpoints where included in the agreed scope.

Traceability Documents

MTC and shipment identification information as required by the order.

Loading Record

Container number, seal number and loading evidence where container supervision is included.

Inspection reduces procurement risk but does not replace the acceptance requirements of the applicable product standard, contract, drawing or any mandatory third-party inspection required by the project.
FAQ

Steel Quality Inspection FAQs

What is checked during a steel pre-shipment inspection?

The inspection scope can include material identity, quantity, weight, dimensions, surface condition, markings, MTC traceability, packing, labels and other requirements stated in the purchase order.

Can you check steel dimensions before shipment?

Yes. Depending on the product form, inspectors can check thickness, width, length, diameter, outside diameter, wall thickness and other agreed dimensional items using suitable measuring tools.

What is the difference between MTC verification and PMI?

MTC verification checks the supplied material against the mill certificate and traceability information. PMI is a separate rapid material-identification method that can help detect alloy mix-ups. PMI does not replace the full certificate or required laboratory testing.

What is checked during container loading supervision?

Typical checks include shipment quantity, package and label condition, container cleanliness and dryness, cargo placement, securing or lashing, and recording the container and seal number after loading.
