LYH STEEL · MATERIAL SELECTION
Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate Grades, Standards & Finishes
Choosing the right stainless steel sheet or plate involves more than selecting a grade. Compare material families, corrosion considerations, delivery standards and surface conditions before preparing your purchase specification.
Common Stainless Steel Grades
Material selection guidance for sheet and plate
Selected Indoor Fabrication
Often evaluated for selected cost-sensitive sheet metal applications where the service environment and corrosion requirements are relatively mild.
Buyer check: Confirm the actual environment, forming requirements and chemical composition. Do not substitute for 304 without technical approval.
General-Purpose Fabrication
Commonly selected for sheet metal fabrication, equipment panels, enclosures, formed components and general industrial applications.
Buyer check: Confirm corrosion exposure, forming requirements, rolling condition and surface finish.
Welded Sheet & Plate Fabrication
A lower-carbon grade often considered for welded fabrication, tanks and equipment where reducing the risk of weld sensitization is important.
Buyer check: Review welding conditions, strength requirements and the applicable product standard.
More Demanding Corrosion Conditions
A molybdenum-bearing grade frequently evaluated for process equipment and applications requiring improved resistance to localized corrosion.
Buyer check: Define chloride concentration, temperature, cleaning chemicals and service conditions.
Appliance & Decorative Sheet
A ferritic stainless grade considered for appliances, interior panels, decorative components and selected mild-environment applications.
Buyer check: Consider magnetic properties, forming, surface appearance and corrosion requirements.
Higher-Strength Plate Applications
A duplex stainless steel considered where higher strength and increased resistance to some forms of chloride corrosion are required.
Buyer check: Verify the required standard, mechanical properties, service temperature and welding procedures.
MATERIAL & DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS
Sheet & Plate Material Standards
Material standards establish the technical basis for specifying stainless steel products. Choose the applicable document and edition for your actual application.
SURFACE APPEARANCE & CONDITION
Stainless Steel Surface Finishes
Surface finish affects visual appearance, fabrication planning and acceptance requirements. For visible panels or controlled surface roughness, define a suitable inspection method and reference sample.
Hot-rolled, heat-treated and descaled finish, commonly associated with industrial plate and heavier fabrication.
Smooth, slightly reflective cold-rolled surface used for general sheet metal, enclosures and equipment.
Bright-annealed finish with a comparatively reflective appearance, selected where surface presentation matters.
Directionally polished satin appearance. Confirm the visual standard and roughness if specified.
Long, directional grain often used for decorative panels. Grain direction and appearance consistency should be agreed.
Highly reflective polished surface. Confirm the commercial finish reference, visual acceptance sample and protective film.

LYH STEEL · SHEET & PLATE PROCESSING
Sheet & Plate Dimensions, Tolerances & Processing
Finished sheet and plate dimensions depend on material grade, parent product size and processing requirements. Define your dimensional tolerances, flatness, edge condition and surface expectations before requesting cut-to-size material.
Key Dimensional Requirements
Specify acceptance requirements, not just nominal sizes
Thickness & Tolerance
State the nominal plate or sheet thickness in millimeters and identify the applicable tolerance standard.
Specify: Thickness, grade, rolling condition, product standard and acceptance limits.
Width & Length
Distinguish the required finished dimensions from standard parent-sheet or parent-plate dimensions.
Specify: Finished width, length, dimensional tolerance and squareness where relevant.
Flatness & Shape
Flatness and distortion may affect fabrication, machining, welding and assembly. Define a suitable inspection basis.
Specify: Flatness requirement, measurement method, leveling needs and permitted shape deviations.
Edges & Surface
Edge condition and surface appearance matter when materials are used for formed parts or visible panels.
Specify: Mill or cut edge, burr limits, finish direction and protective film requirements.
Sheet & Plate Processing Options
Cutting and surface preparation for downstream fabrication
Sheet and plate cutting reference
Shearing & Cut-to-Size
Shearing and cut-to-length processing help prepare stainless steel sheets and plates for fabrication. Finished dimensions, cutting method and edge acceptance should be selected according to material thickness and the required application.
- Finished dimensions: Define target width, length and allowable variation.
- Edge acceptance: Confirm cut-edge quality, burr limitations and squareness.
- Flatness considerations: Identify leveling, shape and handling requirements where applicable.
Stainless steel brushed surface finish
Surface Finishing & Protection
Stainless steel sheets can be specified with different surface appearances for decorative or industrial use. Brushed, hairline, mirror and other finish requests should include visual or measurable acceptance criteria.
- Finish designation: Specify No.4, HL, mirror or another required finish.
- Visual consistency: Confirm grain direction, surface appearance and approved samples if needed.
- Surface protection: Define film requirements, handling instructions and protective packing.
ADDITIONAL CUTTING OPTION
Need Shaped Parts or Cutouts?
For profiles, openings or parts that cannot be prepared by conventional straight-line shearing, discuss laser cutting. Include a dimensioned drawing, required thickness, cut geometry, edge requirements and order quantity. Feasibility depends on the material and equipment scope.
Need Custom Sheet Sizes or Plate Processing?
Send your material grade, applicable standard, thickness, finished width and length, dimensional tolerances, edge and surface requirements, quantity and delivery destination. Attach drawings or inspection criteria for processing work where relevant.
Processing feasibility, finished dimensions, tolerances, flatness, edge quality and surface acceptance depend on the grade, thickness, parent material, equipment and agreed purchase specification. No numerical processing tolerance or surface-quality guarantee is implied without order confirmation.
