Overview

201 stainless steel is designed to reduce nickel content. It uses higher manganese and added nitrogen to maintain an austenitic structure. This reduces material cost while keeping good strength and workable performance.

In procurement practice, 201 is often selected for appliances, decorative panels, and general fabrication where the service environment is not aggressive. For marine or chloride-rich exposure, 304 or 316L is usually specified.

Compared with 304, nickel is lower and manganese is higher. This supports cost control but reduces corrosion resistance in aggressive service.

Forming

201 can be bent, rolled, and drawn. J1 is often selected for deep drawing.

Welding

201 supports TIG, MIG, and resistance welding. Control heat input and keep a stable procedure.

Machining

201 can be harder than 304. Use sharp tools, stable feeding, and proper lubrication.

Surface finish

Common finishes include 2B, BA, No.4, HL, and mirror polish. Use the finish chart to define the target surface clearly.
