Nickel Alloy Plate Materials
Nickel Alloy Plate Grades & Material Selection
Compare nickel alloy plate and sheet materials by grade, UNS designation, product standard and intended service conditions. Each alloy has different corrosion, temperature and fabrication characteristics, so the final selection should follow the project specification.
Inconel 625 Plate & Sheet
UNS N06625Alloy 625 is a solid-solution- strengthened nickel alloy containing chromium, molybdenum and niobium. Plate and sheet are considered for selected corrosion-resistant equipment, fabricated components and environments requiring elevated-temperature performance.
Buyer note: ASTM B443 distinguishes different material grades and heat-treatment conditions. Confirm the specified condition before ordering.
Hastelloy C-276 Plate & Sheet
UNS N10276Alloy C-276 contains nickel, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten. It is considered for chemical-processing equipment exposed to demanding corrosive media. Suitability depends on the specific chemical environment and temperature.
Buyer note: Do not treat C-276 and C-22 as automatic substitutes. Their corrosion resistance differs under specific chemical conditions.
Incoloy 825 Plate & Sheet
UNS N08825Alloy 825 is a nickel-iron- chromium alloy containing molybdenum and copper. It is used in selected acid-processing and chemical-service applications, including equipment exposed to suitable sulfuric and phosphoric acid environments.
Buyer note: Acid resistance should be assessed against the exact process medium. Do not select Alloy 825 based only on a general "acid-resistant" description.
Inconel 601 Plate & Sheet
UNS N06601Alloy 601 is known for high-temperature oxidation resistance. Plate and sheet may be considered for suitable furnace parts, heat shields and thermal processing equipment. Actual performance depends on temperature, atmosphere and operating conditions.
Buyer note: Oxidation resistance does not establish the allowable stress or creep performance of a fabricated component.
Additional Nickel Alloy Plate & Sheet Grades
The following grades cover other corrosion and high-temperature purchasing requirements. Confirm the exact product standard, material condition and available dimensions for each order.
Hastelloy C-22
N06022Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy considered for selected chemical environments, including conditions where resistance to oxidizing media and localized corrosion is important.

Monel 400
N04400Nickel-copper alloy used in selected marine and chemical applications. Environmental factors remain important, particularly stagnant seawater and crevice conditions.
Choosing Nickel Alloy Plate by Service Conditions
Start with the design environment and manufacturing requirements rather than the commercial alloy name alone. The following examples help narrow the materials for engineering review.
Plates for Corrosive Process Equipment
C-276, C-22 and Alloy 825 may be considered for different chemical-processing duties. Their suitability varies with the process medium and service conditions.
Acid concentration, oxidizing or reducing conditions, contaminants, operating temperature and required corrosion data.
Plates for High-Temperature Equipment
Alloy 601 and Incoloy 800H/800HT may be reviewed for different elevated-temperature applications. Oxidation resistance and mechanical strength at temperature are separate considerations.
Maximum and continuous service temperatures, furnace atmosphere, thermal cycling, creep and design loads.
Plates for Selected Marine Components
Alloy 625 and Monel 400 may be considered for different marine applications. Neither should be assumed suitable for every seawater operating condition.
Water flow, chloride exposure, crevice geometry, galvanic coupling and required mechanical properties.
Plates for Forming, Cutting & Welding
Material selection must also consider the intended fabrication route. Different nickel alloy plates can require different forming, cutting and welding procedures.
Plate thickness, bend requirements, heat treatment, fabrication standards, joint details and inspection requirements.
Material selection note: Alloy names and UNS designations identify the material family, but not every necessary purchasing requirement. Confirm the applicable ASTM or other standard, material condition, dimensions, service requirements and inspection criteria. The alloys listed above are not automatic substitutes for one another.

Alloy 625: Annealed vs Solution Annealed
ASTM B443 distinguishes two grades of UNS N06625 according to heat-treatment condition. Confirm the specified grade with your engineering requirement, rather than ordering Alloy 625 by UNS alone.
A defined annealed condition under ASTM B443. Check the applicable material property requirements.
A distinct solution-annealed condition under ASTM B443. Confirm the intended service and specified acceptance criteria.
ASTM specification note: The applicable standard edition governs dimensional, chemical and mechanical requirements. The correct standard must be matched with the actual alloy and product form. Do not copy fixed thickness tolerances, mechanical values or heat-treatment conditions from one alloy specification to another.
Plate Cutting, Surface Finish & Tolerance Requirements
If plates or sheets will be cut or further fabricated, define the required delivered condition. Processing options depend on the selected alloy, material thickness and supplier arrangements.
Finished Dimensions & Cutting Allowance
Specify whether the order requires full plates or smaller cut pieces. Provide the finished dimensions, number of pieces, allowable dimensional deviations and edge condition. Cutting feasibility must be confirmed before quotation.
Descaling, Finish & Protection
Surface condition depends on the alloy specification and processing route. State any requirements for surface appearance, oxidation, contamination control, handling marks or protective separation during shipment.
Thickness Tolerance & Flatness
Confirm the applicable standard tolerances or specifically agreed limits. Thin sheet and heavier plate may have different acceptance requirements. Any tighter tolerance should be stated clearly in the purchase order.
Heat Traceability After Cutting
Where cut pieces must retain material identity, agree on marking, labeling and heat-number traceability before cutting. Required inspection documents should correspond to the actual supplied batch.
Size availability: The supplier's broader material catalogue describes general plate-processing capabilities, but these are not guaranteed stock ranges for every nickel alloy. Confirm thickness, width, length, condition, minimum order and cutting arrangements for the specific grade.

Nickel Alloy Plate Applications
Nickel Alloy Plate Applications & Fabrication Considerations
Nickel alloy plates and sheets are used as starting materials for corrosion-resistant and high-temperature fabricated components. Material selection should account for service conditions, plate thickness, forming requirements, welding procedures and inspection criteria.
Chemical Vessels, Reactors & Process Equipment
Nickel alloy plate and sheet may be specified for fabricated vessel sections, reactor components, process equipment liners and other parts exposed to corrosive chemicals. The appropriate material depends on the exact process medium, concentration and temperature.
Selection factors: Chemical concentration, impurities, oxidizing or reducing conditions, corrosion allowance and welded-joint requirements.
Industrial Furnace Parts & Heat-Treatment Fixtures
Selected nickel alloy plates are used as raw materials for furnace trays, heat shields, formed fixtures and components exposed to hot gases. Oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength and resistance to distortion must be evaluated separately.
Selection factors: Continuous temperature, thermal cycling, furnace atmosphere, service loads and creep requirements.
Plate Components for Chloride-Exposed Equipment
Nickel alloy plate can be considered for selected fabricated components exposed to seawater or chloride-bearing environments. Alloy 625 and Monel 400 have different corrosion characteristics and should be evaluated for the actual equipment and exposure conditions.
Selection factors: Flowing or stagnant seawater, crevice geometry, galvanic contact, deposits and operating temperature.
Exhaust Treatment, Scrubber & Equipment Liners
Selected nickel alloy plates may be considered for equipment components exposed to corrosive condensates, industrial exhaust or chemical-processing streams. Wet corrosion and dry, high-temperature oxidation are different design conditions and may require different alloys.
Selection factors: Gas chemistry, acid dew point, condensate composition, temperature changes, erosion and fabrication details.
Choosing Nickel Alloy Plate by Application
Different service conditions point toward different material candidates. These examples are intended for preliminary selection, not as approval to substitute one alloy for another.
Check the actual chemical composition, temperature, impurities, corrosion mechanism and requirements for the welded condition.
Consider oxidation, thermal cycling, stress, creep performance and the required material heat-treatment condition.
Assess seawater movement, stagnant conditions, crevices, dissimilar-metal contact and the equipment's mechanical requirements.
Distinguish wet corrosive condensates from dry, high-temperature gases. One alloy should not be assumed suitable for both environments.
Application limitation: Corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance depend on the specific service environment and material condition. A general application reference does not establish pressure-equipment approval, allowable design stress, corrosion life or guaranteed service performance.
Nickel Alloy Plate Fabrication Considerations
Forming and welding requirements should be considered when selecting the starting plate or sheet. Nickel alloys can behave differently from conventional stainless steel during cutting, bending and thermal processing.
Cutting Methods & Edge Preparation
Depending on the alloy, thickness and required edge condition, mechanical cutting, waterjet, laser or plasma cutting may be considered. Heat-affected edges can require additional preparation before welding.
Plate thickness, cut dimensions, tolerance, cut-edge quality, allowance for finishing and subsequent welding.
Cold Forming & Work Hardening
Nickel alloys differ in work-hardening behavior and required forming force. Bend radius, forming reduction and the starting material condition affect fabrication. Significant cold deformation may require intermediate or subsequent heat treatment.
Alloy and condition, plate thickness, required bend radius, forming sequence, springback and post-forming requirements.
Weld Procedure & Filler Metal Selection
Welding a nickel alloy plate requires consideration of the base materials, filler classification, joint design, heat input and cleanliness. Weld-metal composition and the heat-affected zone can influence the finished component's performance.
Base metal, joining process, qualified WPS/PQR where required, filler metal, inspection plan and service environment.
Surface Cleaning & Heat Treatment
Forming and welding may affect the plate's surface and metallurgical condition. Oxides, cutting residue and welding contamination should be addressed through an appropriate procedure. Any required subsequent heat treatment is alloy-specific.
Required surface condition, cleaning method, inspection requirements, heat-treatment procedure and acceptance criteria.
Fabrication guidance: Published procedures for one nickel alloy must not be applied automatically to another. For example, forming and re-annealing guidance for Hastelloy C-276 is specific to that material and the amount of deformation. Welding and post-weld heat-treatment decisions should follow the relevant alloy guidance and project code.
Consider the Final Fabricated Component
The same UNS alloy may require different purchasing conditions depending on whether the plate will be cut, bent, welded or exposed to high temperatures. The final component specification should guide the raw material order.
What to Include in a Fabrication-Related Plate RFQ
If the nickel alloy plate will be used in fabricated equipment, provide enough information to identify the correct raw material and purchasing condition.

Nickel Alloy Plate Dimensional & Surface Inspection
Inspection requirements vary between sheet, heavier plate and cut pieces. The final acceptance criteria should reference the agreed product standard and purchasing documents.
Plate Thickness, Size & Flatness
Plate dimensions must meet the specified product standard or other agreed tolerances. The sampling plan and measurement method should be defined when special inspection is required.
- Thickness Nominal thickness, measurement locations and allowable deviation.
- Dimensions Width, length, squareness and cutting requirements.
- Shape Flatness and other applicable shape requirements.
- Acceptance Specified standard, tolerance class, inspection coverage and report requirements.
Plate Surface, Edges & Condition
Surface appearance depends on the alloy, rolling method, annealing and descaling condition. Specify the required finish rather than assuming every plate has the same appearance.
- Surface Visual condition, unacceptable defects and agreed finish.
- Edges Mill or cut edges, edge quality and preparation needs.
- Condition Rolling and heat-treatment requirements.
- Protection Separation, handling and surface protection where specified.
PMI testing limitation: Handheld XRF can assist in identifying many nickel alloys through measurable alloying elements. However, it cannot directly measure carbon and does not establish heat-treatment condition or mechanical properties. Use suitable laboratory analysis and material test records when those requirements must be verified.
Material Certificates & Inspection Documentation
Specify the certificate type and testing requirements before placing the order. The documentation should correspond to the actual alloy, product form, material condition and supplied batch.
Certificate availability: Inspection document types are not interchangeable. A standard material test report is not automatically an EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate. Additional testing and Type 3.2 arrangements must be agreed with the responsible parties before order confirmation.
Keep Plate Identification Connected to the MTC
Nickel alloy plate orders may contain different grades, material conditions or heat numbers. Identification requirements should be agreed before cutting, repacking or combining shipments.
Nickel Alloy Plate & Sheet Export Packaging
The packing method should suit the plate dimensions, surface condition, shipment weight and transportation route. Packaging and marking are important purchasing requirements for international material shipments.
Plate Stacking & Load Protection
Heavy plates require suitable support and restraint during handling and transport. Loading arrangements should account for plate length, width, total mass and lifting requirements.
Package dimensions, gross weight, supporting structure, securing method and unloading requirements.
Moisture, Scratches & Edge Damage
The selected packing method should consider water exposure, handling damage and contact between plates. Surface-sensitive materials may require suitable separators, protective wrapping or edge protection.
Surface protection, interleaving, edge guards, moisture control and any packaging restrictions.
Labels, Packing Lists & Wood Packaging
Shipment identification should agree with the commercial and inspection documents. If regulated solid-wood pallets or crates are used, applicable ISPM 15 and destination requirements must be checked.
Package marks, material identification, packing list, destination requirements and compliant wood packaging where applicable.
ISPM 15 packaging note: ISPM 15 applies to regulated wood packaging material such as solid-wood pallets, crates and dunnage. Packaging made entirely from qualifying processed wood, such as plywood, is generally excluded from the standard. The destination country's import requirements and the actual packaging construction must still be checked.

Nickel Alloy Plate Purchasing Questions
Nickel Alloy Plate & Sheet FAQs & Final RFQ Checklist
Find answers to common questions about nickel alloy plate grades, dimensions, ASTM specifications, material conditions, cutting and inspection documents. Use the purchasing checklist to prepare your plate or sheet quotation request.
What is the difference between nickel alloy plate and sheet?
Nickel alloy plate and sheet are flat-rolled products ordered by thickness, width and length. They are distinguished by the applicable product standard and thickness classification.
Sheet is generally used for thinner flat products, while plate commonly refers to heavier material. The precise classification should follow the agreed specification rather than a universal thickness cutoff.
Which nickel alloy grades are available as plate or sheet?
Common plate and sheet specifications cover selected grades such as Inconel 625, Inconel 600, Inconel 601, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy C-22, Incoloy 825, Incoloy 800H/800HT and Monel 400.
Actual supply depends on the selected grade, dimensions, heat-treatment condition and order quantity. The list does not indicate that every material is in stock.
Which ASTM standards apply to nickel alloy plate and sheet?
The correct ASTM standard depends on the alloy and product form. Common examples include:
ASTM B443 for Alloy 625; ASTM B575 for C-276 and C-22; ASTM B424 for Alloy 825; ASTM B168 for Alloys 600 and 601; ASTM B409 for 800H/800HT; and ASTM B127 for Monel 400.
Specify the applicable standard and required edition in your RFQ. Different standards may define different material conditions, dimensional tolerances and acceptance criteria.
What is the difference between Alloy 625 Grade 1 and Grade 2 plate?
Under ASTM B443-26, Alloy 625 (UNS N06625) is supplied in different heat-treatment conditions.
Grade 1 is annealed and is normally used at service temperatures up to 593°C (1100°F). Grade 2 is solution annealed and is normally used above that temperature where creep and rupture resistance are required.
These are standard-defined material conditions, not interchangeable purchase descriptions. The final selection must follow the equipment design.
Can Hastelloy C-276 plate be replaced with C-22 plate?
Not automatically. Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) and C-22 (UNS N06022) have different alloy compositions and corrosion characteristics.
Both may be specified under ASTM B575, but sharing a product standard does not mean they perform identically in a given environment.
Any substitution should be reviewed against chemical concentration, temperature, impurities, welding requirements and the original engineering specification.
What plate thicknesses, sizes and tolerances can be requested?
State the nominal thickness × width × length and the required quantity. Include any special thickness tolerance, flatness, edge or surface requirements.
Available dimensions vary by alloy, production method, condition and manufacturing route. Supplier catalogue ranges should not be interpreted as guaranteed availability for every nickel alloy.
If the order requires tighter tolerances than the applicable material standard, specify them before quotation.
Can nickel alloy plates be cut to size or prepared for bending and welding?
Cut-to-size requirements may be submitted for quotation review. The available cutting method and tolerance depend on plate thickness, alloy grade, quantity and supplier arrangements.
If the plate will be bent or welded, provide the intended fabrication requirements. Material condition, work hardening, bend radius and welding procedure can affect the starting plate specification.
Cutting, forming or welding services are not included unless expressly confirmed in the quotation.
What surface finish should be specified for nickel alloy plate?
Surface condition depends on whether the product is hot rolled, cold rolled, annealed, descaled or otherwise processed.
Specify any special finish, acceptable surface condition, edge preparation or protective packaging requirements.
Do not assume that stainless steel surface labels such as BA, No.4 or 8K are standard delivery conditions for every nickel alloy plate specification.
Can nickel alloy plates be supplied with MTC, PMI or EN 10204 3.1 documents?
Buyers can request material certificates, traceability records, PMI or other inspection requirements during quotation review.
The required documents must correspond to the actual supplied grade, product form, material condition and heat or lot identification.
EN 10204 Type 3.1 is a specific inspection document type and should not be assumed from a generic MTC description. Its availability must be confirmed with the responsible manufacturer.
PMI does not replace complete chemical analysis or mechanical test documentation.
How are nickel alloy plate prices, MOQ and delivery times determined?
Pricing depends on the alloy grade, plate dimensions, material condition, quantity and processing requirements.
MOQ and lead time may vary according to actual material availability and whether production or processing is required.
Send the destination, requested shipping date and delivery terms to receive a quotation based on the specific order requirements.
