India's Stainless Steel Demand Jumps 8% in FY25 – More Growth Ahead
India’s stainless steel market is firing on all cylinders. Fresh numbers from industry experts show consumption hit 4.85 million tonnes last fiscal year – a solid 8% jump from the previous period. This cements India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing stainless markets, even navigating global headwinds.
The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) points to strong fundamentals driving this expansion. Current production capacity sits at 7.5 million tonnes, running at just 60% utilization. That leaves serious room to ramp up output as demand grows.
Key growth drivers:
Infrastructure push: Water storage projects
Green energy transition: Solar/wind installations
Strategic sectors: Defense and aerospace applications
Looking ahead, ISSDA predicts consumption could nearly triple to 12.5-12.7 million tonnes by FY2040, potentially reaching 19-20 million tonnes by FY2047.
“The runway for growth is long,” notes ISSDA President Rajamani Krishnamurti. “With supportive policies and sustained demand, we’ve barely tapped our production potential.”
Market Takeaway:
With low capacity utilization and multi-sector demand drivers, India’s stainless sector offers major opportunities for material suppliers and equipment manufacturers through this decade.
