Malaysia Slaps Temporary Steel Tariffs on China, Korea, Vietnam Imports
Malaysia just hit pause on cheap galvanized steel shipments. Starting July 7, provisional anti-dumping duties kick in for key Asian suppliers – shaking up trade flows for at least 120 days.
The new duty ranges:
China: 3.86% to 26.8%
South Korea: 8.97% to 31.47%
Vietnam: 11.41% to 57.9%
These guarantee-backed tariffs target hot-dipped zinc-coated steel (common grades like GI coils/sheets) while authorities finalize their investigation. The clock’s ticking:
Final ruling due by November 3
Companies must respond by July 14
The move follows CSC Steel’s complaint about unfair pricing. Government investigators confirm “enough evidence exists” to probe further, putting importers on notice.
What’s affected:
All major galvanized steel products under HS codes 7210, 7212, 7225 and 7226 series – essentially most industrial-grade zinc-coated sheet metal.
Bottom line for traders:
Review current Malaysian shipments immediately. These temporary duties could become permanent by winter, reshaping regional steel pricing.
